The chairman of the Finance Committee is calling for a joint meeting with selectmen and the School Committee to explain to taxpayers the $550,000 snafu in free cash. “We need to find out how it happened, why it happened and what’s in place to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” said Finance Committee Chairman Richard J. Pavadore. “The huge error can’t be overlooked.” Last week, the Department of Revenue notified the town an audit found the same $550,000 had been used as free cash in both fiscal 2008 and 2009. The DOR told the town either reduce the 2010 budget by the same amount or find the money elsewhere. Pavadore said a joint meeting should be held to explain to taxpayers what happened and “where we’re standing.”
