Selectmen will now move forward with spending casino planning money after the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe sent a letter stating the town does not have to pay back those funds, even if its casino plan fizzles. The tribe, through its investors, so far has anted up $1 million, but some officials were wary the town would be on the hook if plans for the casino fell through. Last week, the Finance Committee advised selectmen to stop spending the money. On Aug. 19, Wampanoag Tribal Council Chairman Cedric Cromwell sent a letter to Town Manager Charles J. Cristello stating, “the Tribe has no intention of seeking the return of monies provided by the Tribe that were spent by the Town according to the terms of the Intergovernmental Agreement.”
The tribe (or someone for the tribe) has only contributed 3/4 of a million (3 payments of $250,000.00).
My question (hopefully to be answered tonight) is did the tribe make the payments or did someone else make the payments to the town?
Sounds like splitting hairs but if someone else made the payment don’t they have the right to get their money back is things don’t pan out?
Just my oponion but I might be all wrong.
