Middleboro police are helping the state Department of Correction to contact residents who want to be on the Rapid Notify System, which can contact people within a mile of the Bridgewater prison of a prisoner escape. Up to 1,000 phone numbers can be notified within three minutes of a prisoner escape through the system, according to Police Chief Bruce D. Gates in a Jan. 20 memo to selectmen. The Rapid Notify System was implemented following a Nov. 27 incident in which Manson Brown, 51, serving a 10-year sentence for a home invasion and armed robbery, walked away from the prison. He was later captured on Jan. 4 in DeKalb County, Georgia, and returned to MCI Bridgewater.
