Selectmen met to find out how the town became burdened with more than 100 private ways and what can be done about it.

“We went through quite an event with the private ways and plowing,” said selectmen Chairman Patrick Rogers. In February,  a court ruled that the town could no longer plow private ways.  The ruling came in response to a lawsuit against the town by 20 residents who said plowing those streets was illegal because the town had not accepted a provision of state law that allows public funds to be used for private purposes.

Rogers blamed the high number of unaccepted streets on developers who abandoned their subdivisions before the roads were complete.
