An analysis of state records and census data for towns with populations greater than 10,000 people shows Westport has 1,435 Class A firearms licenses — a little more than 9 percent of its residents. Westport shares the top five with Charlton, Belchertown, Middleborough and Lakeville.
At the bottom of the list are much larger cities like Boston, which has 3,730 residents with Class A licenses or less than 1 percent of its population. Other towns with the lowest percentages include Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea and Watertown.
