A dozen Middleboro high school seniors learned to climb a 100-foot ladder on the back of a tower truck, hoist 35-foot ladders, tie ropes, gear up in complete darkness, trained on the Jaws of Life and even donned survival suits to jump into the Nemasket River in January for a practice water rescue. The internship program, taught at the central fire station, gives seniors insight into the life of a firefighter. They hear sirens, watch firefighters gear up and see the engines roll out. It’s a combination of classroom instruction, drills, live burns and water rescues.
In exchange for their hard work, the students get an education, the basic skills of a being firefighter and one leg up on their peers when applying for a job. Read the rest of the story on EnterpriseNews.com.
Very nice program that encourages the students of today to be the life-savers of tomorrow…
