In November 2010, Perkins Paper, a family owned company, bought out Cirelli’s, for an undisclosed amount. The stock, drivers and warehouse personnel in Middleboro were moved to the Taunton facility, said Dan Healy, Perkins director of finance. He said a few people were laid off, but he hopes that if sales rise from $380 million to the $450 million goal, everyone will be rehired.
The building is still owned by Cirelli’s, but Perkins holds a five-year lease. For now Healy said company officials are considering sub-leasing the Middleboro warehouse, but will continue to operate the cash-and-carry outlet.
The cash-and-carry outlet has evolved into something of a weekend happening, and during the summer is host to drive-in movies, cruise nights and a farmers’ market. David Van Loan, store manager, said the summer events are a big draw, but it has not been decided if they will resume. He said past events have drawn up to 2,000 people. “We hope to continue.”
