Middleboro’s Board of Selectmen voted unanimously to approve a three-year contract for Town Manager Charles J. Cristello. Cristello, who currently earns $133,900 annually, will not seek a salary increase this year or next year. His current salary reflects a 3 percent pay increase that the selectmen authorized last year. He did not accept that until recently, saying he wanted to help curb expenses. Cristello, who helps oversee the town budget, had asked department heads to cut their budgets in the past few years in order to offset large budget deficits. Cristello’s contract runs from July 1 to June 30, 2014.

This is good news for the town – especially in light of a recent Enterprise article that praised Mr. Cristello for his responsiveness to a “on the spot” request for public information.

Kudos to our town manager for understanding his role and performing it professionally and competently.
