Electric rates at Middleboro Gas & Electric have dropped for a second time this year, saving the average customer more than $160 annually. Rates have been dropping since 2010, and the combined decreases have cut the average electric bill by about $300. The rates were reduced because the fuel charge adjustment is lower.
A monthly bill includes fixed costs – for crews, equipment and maintenance – and a charge for the actual electricity passed on to customers through the fuel charge. The G&E will use money from a stabilization account to even out the variable fuel charge from month to month. Utility officials have steadily decreased rates for the past two years after the stabilization fund was replenished.
