Annie Elizabeth Mont was born on August 24, 1859, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, to Joseph Mont and Anne Ackerman. She spent her early years in Halifax Ward 5, Halifax West, Nova Scotia, living with her parents and siblings, as recorded in the 1871 census.

In 1880, at the age of 21, Annie married George Cockburne Hartlen at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The couple began their married life in Ward 5, Halifax City, Nova Scotia, where they welcomed their first child and also lived with four of George’s siblings by the 1881 census.

By 1891, Annie and George had relocated to Ward 6a, Halifax City, where they lived with their growing family, now consisting of five children. Annie’s brother, William Mont, also resided with them, indicating the close-knit nature of her family.

Tragedy struck when George passed away before the 1901 census, leaving Annie a widow. She continued to live in Ward 5, Halifax City, Nova Scotia, with her five children. Despite the loss of her husband, Annie’s strength and resilience were evident as she maintained the household and cared for her children.

In 1911, the census records show Annie residing on Uniacke Street in Halifax with four of her children. By 1921, she had moved in with her son, John Edward Hartlen, his wife, and their two children, demonstrating her integral role within her extended family.

The 1931 census recorded Annie living with her daughter Frances Eugene (Hartlen) and son-in-law John Samuel Arsenault on Big Harbour Street in South Gut, Nova Scotia. Her later years saw her residing on Seaforth Street in Halifax with her daughter Mary E. (Hartlen) Forbes and son-in-law Wilfred Leo Forbes.

Annie Elizabeth Mont Hartlen passed away on June 10, 1936, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, due to cardio-renal disease caused by arteriosclerosis. She was 76 years old. Annie was laid to rest in Camp Hill Cemetery in Halifax, leaving behind a legacy of strength and dedication to her family throughout her life.
